When living with CKD, looking for kidney-friendly sauces and condiments at the grocery store may seem daunting due to high levels of sodium and phosphorus additives. Although these are factors to look out for, let’s take a look at some kidney-friendly sauces or condiments, that you can use in cooking, and a guide for CKD friendly grocery store products to make grocery shopping easy!
Reading The Label For Kidney-Friendly Sauces
When buying any pre-prepared store product there are a few simple guidelines you can follow on the food label to assess if a food is CKD friendly.
- First off, note the serving size on the nutrition facts panel and how much you would use for a recipe or as a topping.
- When trying to assess if a product is suitable, check the % daily value of sodium per serving. Ideally you should try to limit sodium intake to less than 2300 mg/day. To achieve this goal, it is best to look for products that contain less than 5% of the daily value per serving on the nutrition facts table.
- If potassium is a nutrient of concern for you, look for products with less than 5% of the daily value per serving, and if potassium is not found on the label, check the ingredient list for any potassium additives.
- Lastly, phosphorus additives are very commonly used in shelf stable and pre prepared products, and is commonly not included in the nutrition facts table, so it is very important to check the ingredient list for anything that says phosphorus or has something with “phos†in it (i.e. phosphate, phosphoric).
